Something New and Different

This has not been the best week so far but I'm not going to have another gloomy post.

The good news. Rebecca is Student of the Quarter and once again made the B Honor Roll.

The bad news. Another bus suspension - this time for 3 days. At least no bad language or inappropriate gestures. She was doing jumping jacks in front of the parked bus and compounded it by slapping the rear of the bus just as the driver was about to pull out.

Both serious safety issues of course. I'm driving them in the morning - they're walking home in the afternoon. Close to two miles but they're young and strong.

Does a flat tire and discovering I have to replace all 4 count for as many points as a defunct appliance?

The internet is still iffy but I spent part of today catching up on my friends and ran across this link from Tammy who in turn borrowed it from Laurie,a blogging friend of hers from my home state of New York.

I looked up Herkimer County in New York and found several old postcards of my hometown and the surrounding area. I remember many of them, especially the old Forge where Eliphalet Remington built his first rifle. The company he founded provided my dad with steady employment through much of the great depression and many years after.

I did my early driving in the Gorge they talk about. Lots of curves and a creek running through it. At least the road was at the bottom of the Gorge, not the top, and I never hit a tree.

Herkimer County is named after General Nicholas Herkimer who led his militia in the Battle of Oriskany, Revolutionary War. He was wounded and died several days later. His endeavors were required reading for all of us Mohawk Valley students back then. I wonder if any of the students there today have even heard of him.

For those of you interested in old photos and the history of the USA, this is a great site.

Thanks to all for the comments and take care.

Ann I know it was no laughing matter but I couldn't not help laughing when I read about the bus suspension and her doing jumping jacks and slapping hte bus.

Sorry about your tires. That really sucks. The husband has been telling me he needs to change all 4 of mine on the van. I am not sure what he is waiting on.

Good for her! But, like Atasha, I sort of find what she was doing funny, which other people probably did too, which is why she was doing it.

Man, all four tires? Ouch. Do you have a Costco membership or know someone that does? They have pretty good tire prices.

I hope this week comes up better for you.

I actually think four tires is about equal to an appliance (at least on our truck it was!)
I linked to the same site in my post today as you did!!
I collect old postcards, so this was a great resource to me!
hugs!!

gran,
That is great to have all that history! I loved it, thank you for sharing that!

Good for Rebecca for student of the quarter AND Honor Roll. That is good news.

I'm with Gina on the tires. The best and most affordable set I've ever purchased was from Costco. Good luck and I hope it's not too expensive for you.

Wow...we just had to do that with our car. All 4.
I had to laugh at the story too but I know it is no giggling natter. MY son was suspended once for some silly infraction and he was a quiet kid!
WE lived in Rome NY for over 3 years so I enjoyed reading your post! I also collect old postcards...I will have to check that site!
Have a good Wednesday...: )
Hugs,
Sue

I've been so busy trying to visit those who've helped me celebrate my Blogiversary that I haven't had a chance to visit that postcard site, but it's on my to-do list.

Sorry about the kids and the tires. Both seem to be continuing issues for you right now, don't they? Discipline and unexpected expenses.

Thanks for helping me celebrate my Blogiversary! It's special friends like you that make it so worthwhile and enjoyable. ;D

Take care, Ann. :-)

I keep up, Ann - just. Rebecca sounds quite a girl. When kids get slammed for something, they don't consider the impact on already stressed out adults. Anyway; walking home 2 miles will not hurt them. Double such distances used to be normal - still are in some parts of the world. Hope she'd learned it this time though.

Hi Ann ~~ Sorry about the needed new tires. And I am sorry Rebecca misbehaved again, in spite of her doing so well
at her lessons. Poor you, there is always something happening that worries you or costs you heaps of money.
Take care, dear friend, Love, Merle.

Congrats to Rebecca for being Student of the Quarter but what a shame about the bus suspension...I could just picture her though! lol Having to buy 4 new tires is as expensive as having to buy a new appliance..sheesh! Wish they had such a site for postcards showing Canadian provinces:-) Hugs xox

Yay for the good news. Well done Rebecca! My boys - in their teens almost drove me to drink - now they are a joy as I'm sure Rebecca will be.

I went to that postcard site yesterday, too. The ones from my hometown were very cool to look at.

Well, Congrats to Rebecca for her accomplishments. Perhaps this latest suspension will do the trick and she'll straighten up. Do you suppose someone put her up to that? It doesn't sound like something you would just feel like doing.

Sorry about the tires. And Rebecca. But congrats on the honor.
As for the MV stuff, you know it's right up my alley. Did I ever tell you I used to work for the Evening Telegram?
As for Gen. Herkimer - yup, the kids still have to learn about him. And visit all the forts, etc.
Just drove down the Gorge last Saturday night!
Remington Arms is still here and is still the county's largest employer.

Congrats to Rebecca for the great grades. Hopefully walking in the cold will cause them to be better on the bus. Thanks for the site. I will check it out. I am not a fan of history but I do like looking at pictures.

What a great honour!

The bus thing sounds pretty normal to me. I would have done that. Sucks that she got suspended though.

Yes, they are young and strong and the exercise will probably do them good. I'm sure you could do without the hassles though. ec

Hi Ann ~~ Glad you liked the 4 Dads joke
It was a good one. Hope all is going well at your house. Love, Merle.

Congratulations to Rebecca...oops about the suspension. Kids will be kids, and dont'cha wish they had a bit of sense sometimes?

I've been keeping an eye on my tyres too, lately, wondering if they're due for replacement but so far...alright.

Hope all is well in your world.

My great grandmother on my dad side was born in Herkimer County in town of Vanhornville. I pretty sure the town isn't their any more or it so small it hard to find.

A huge congrats to Rebecca! Way to go, girl! But watch that bus slapping next time, ok?

Well, sounds like a not-so-great week, no. I've had a few of those as of late. But you know, things are only going to get better.

Until then, sending you some hugs :)
