These couple is my great-grandparents on my dad's side. It was probably taken about the same time as the older picture of my Uncle Jim (their oldest son) with all his fiddles and other stringed instruments. I would imagine he took the picture. They both lived far into their 90's and were married one month shy of 75 years when one died and then the other.
I never knew them. They had 7 or 8 kids altogether. Some I never met; others like my uncle I knew very well. Tim had the photo in his album and sent it over to me. I don't want to inundate you with family history but I did want to get it on here. Originals have a way of getting lost and this one may be irreplaceable.

I just love old pictures... we have a bunch from Peter's mom, Germans who are long gone. Oma went through them with J, so J knows who most of them are...

back in those days, they were the pillars of society. Remember Queen Victoria? You're right though; all the pictures from those times look just like that. If they smiled, their faces would break and it didn't look like they liked each other very much. 75 years?
I have a bunch of these and I treasure them. I have on of my grandpa as a baby with his dad. IT is one of those glass plate ones. I treasure it.
I hope your kids realize that pictures importance.

They look remarkedly serene and composed to me.
In those days I understand it took some time in setting up prior to taking the picture and hence the momentary smile was usually absent.
Living into their 90's is remarkable, and I would be interested to know the reason for their longevity. Fresh air and physical work ?
I think raising and feeding a family in those times would have been difficult !!

Thanks Ann, For showing me where these pictures are. I love looking at old pictures even if I don't know anyone... I go through the old pictures in flea markets just hoping I will see someone I know...LOL
