Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

To my friends over 50 and with thanks to Margaret.

1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you.
2. In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first.
3. No one expects you to run--anywhere.
4. People call at 9 pm and ask, Did I wake you????
5. People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.
6. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.
7. Things you buy now won't wear out.
8. You can eat supper at 4 pm.
9. You can live without sex but not your glasses.
10. You get into heated arguments about pension plans.
11. You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.
12. You quit trying to hold your stomach in no matter who walks into the room.
13. You sing along with elevator music.
14. Your eyes won't get much worse.
15. Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.
16. Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the national weather service.
17. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either.
18. Your supply of brain cells is finally down to manageable size.
19. You can't remember who sent you this list.

I linked to Margaret before I pasted the list because I was afraid I'd forget where I read it in the few minutes it took to get from her blog to mine.

Another busy day. Elcie's birthday is the 9th so we took her birthday shopping this weekend instead of next. The weather was beautiful, we have a bicycle race going on right here in town, and there was lots to do. She picked out a couple of videos, a cd, and a book about horses. She tells me she's outgrown toys. Not surprising at 14 but she's always been the only one who liked dolls (the others decapitated the Barbies - my sentiments exactly). So much has changed in only a year.

Meantime, my friend took the other girls to the bike race which went practically down our street. It's a big deal here; bikers from all over the country participate and take it very seriously.

We saw cyclists everywhere and had to wind our way around their route to get across town.

I cooked a big pot roast with lots of veggies and potatoes yesterday so tonight day is leftovers. Tomorrow I'm planning on tuna salad with hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, cukes, etc. It's asparagus season here (the only time of year I can afford the stuff) so I may add cold asparagus as well. The weather is supposed to stay warm. If it doesn't, I'll make comfort food instead.

Rebecca wants to help prepare brunch in the morning. I'll probably supervise and hold the number of dishes she uses down a bit. Someone suggested I have her wash the dishes. She does from time to time but it turns into as big a project as her baking. I can find other ways for her to help. I'll wash the dishes; otherwise my kitchen will be tied up for hours. She's been known to empty the silverware drawer and wash every spoon and fork.

I'm thinking about French toast. It's much easier than pancakes which still give her a little trouble with flipping. It'll depend on how much patience I can muster in the a.m.

Right now Ray and I are watching the Chinese New Year parade (Year of the Boar) from San Francisco. A belated Gung Hay Fat Choy to all and take care everyone.

Cyclists! nice... have any of the kids taken a liking to it?
It been months since i've been thinkin i need to take up some classes- kick boxing or sketching or classical indian dance. What makes me step back is the thought that my weekends are very unpredictable.
French toast... we have something called Bombay toast, simple you could try it if you will:
slice a couple of shallots(5-6 if small), slice 2 green chillies, if you'd like you could add finely chopped ginger (2 centimeters). Chop some a lil coriander leaves(cilantro) and mix them up with your hand and give it a good squeeze. Add all this to beaten egg with soem salt and pepper. Dip bread into this batter and fry.
Simple. Let me know how it goes :)

Hi Ann ~~ I copied that list of Margaret's too but will wait a while. Everything seems to be going OK with your family at present which
is great. I hope Elcie has a lovely birthday on the 9th. Glad you enjoyed my jokes. Thank you so much Ann for your good wishes for my hospital trip
tomorrow. I appreciate your concern
and prayers. I should be OK and hope to post Tuesday. Take care, much love, Merle.

Happy belated new year Ann!! This will be your year!!

"Year of the Boar" must be a North-Americanization. I'd always understood it to be the year of the Pig. Less, um, strong and noble, somehow - but apparently, a very auspicious year. Chinese authorities are concerned that huge numbers of families will choose to have their ONE allotted child this year, and that medical services won't be able to keep up.

That list made me laugh. I got my first pair of glasses when I was 11 - when my glasses were far, far more important that (eew!) sex, but throughout the intervening years, I've always known which it would be easier to live without... Being near-blind puts so many things in 'perspective'. Ar, ar, ar.

In the spring/summer, asparagus grows wild around here. Many people have asparagus beds planted, but if you're so inclined you can just stop and get some from many many roadside ditches and medians. Too bad I don't like the stuff! French toast, on the other hand, I adore. If you have any left over just send it my way :-)

Oh I can well and truly relate to that list! Especially singing along with elevator music!

You know girls are growing when they give up their Barbies! And I so agree about the decapitating bit...

Bikes, eh? Not into them myself. I used to be as a teenager, had a boyfriend with a motorbike, much to my mother's consternation. Used to love flying along on the pillion of that thing. In those days we weren't required to wear helmets so it was fabulous feeling the wind in my hair. Aaaaah, reminiscences...

Hi Ann

A good list!! , and I also I think we become craftier as you get older don’t you think!! I am sure bringing up your young family keeps you young at heart! Are you still singing along to the opera’s?!

I participated in the Great Victorian Bike ride -over 100 KM each day many years ago with over 5000 cyclists, along the Great Ocean Road, similar to California’s coastline.

Congratulations to Elsie as she matures into adulthood. I always thought 14 was a difficult age, in between becoming an adult but still children in some respects, yet they believe they are totally adult and oh so mature!

Best wishes

Re washing up - my Gran used to drive Mum mad by wiping the dishes with a damp cloth before drying them woth a teatowel and my Ma in law used to pur boiling water over the washed dishes

Too many things on the over 50 list fit me all too well. Even your leftovers sounded good to me - tuna salad would be nice too. We have at least one annual bike race in our area - big deal around here. ec
